Spotlight on Staff: Lee

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

My name is Lee (on the right) and I’m 19  years old. I’m from Great Neck and I’m currently a sophomore at Quinnipiac University studying print journalism. I came to North Shore Day Camp as a camper back in 2002 along with my brother Mitchell who was in 2nd grade at the time, so I credit and thank my mom and dad for sending us. Little did I know that this place was going to be my second home!

The most important thing to know about me is that I love sports and everyone at camp knows that about me! In 5th grade, my camp nickname was Ripken, because I would wear Cal Ripken Jr.’s jersey twice a week (washed of course – thanks mom!) I’m also a big Mets, Jets, Knicks, and Rangers fan.  My brother and I both played baseball each summer while growing up.  Many times after the camp day was over, already exhausted by the fun at North Shore, we would hectically rush off the bus, change into our uniforms and be on our way to the diamond.   Life was simple then – my responsibilities were to just have fun and be a kid, which I did.  I was the captain of my baseball team in high school and playing baseball is still my favorite hobby today.

Exciting Trips in our Voyagers Program!

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

With 2 to 3 days per week in camp, and 2 to 3 days of travel, the Voyagers mix the best of Day Camp with a taste of “Teen Travel”. While at camp, Voyagers have two electives per day, one swim, and activities that we know that they love.

On the other days, they find themselves enjoying special and exciting adventures in NYC, at the beach, all over the Island, or out of NY, including two extended, 4 day trips to exciting destinations!

Our most recent trip for Summer 2011 was “Gone Fishing” where our teens boarded a boat and went out for a day with their fishing poles in-hand for a spectacular afternoon. Fish were bountiful along with the many other creatures of the seas that we came across! See for yourself in the pictures below!

Rookie Day at Sleep Away!

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

Selecting the right camp for your child is both important and impactful.  When you selected NSDC as a place for your child to grow summer after summer, you entrusted us to become your “Partner in Parenting” – a role that we take very seriously when developing fun, safe & active programs each summer.  As your child grows up, NSDC and the other members of the TLC Family of Camps are here to continue that partnership.

When your child is ready to move from day camp to sleep away camp, we know there are a lot of things to consider.  Sleep away camp is, for most people, an experience that can last for six or more years (with memories that last for many decades after!)  Such a big decision shouldn’t be made lightly, so we’ve specifically designed our Rookie Day Program to allow your child an opportunity to “taste” the sleep away camp experience, while giving you, as parents, a close-up look at our facilities, program, supervision and philosophy.  Oh, and all the fun too! :)  Each of our Resident Camps (Timber LakeTyler Hill and Timber Lake West) offer Rookie Days throughout the summer, hoping to help make choosing the right sleep-away camp a little easier. Timber Lake Family of Camps: Adopt-A-Family

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

For the fourth year in a row, the Timber Lake Family of Camps has joined together for the holidays to make a difference in the greater Glen Cove community. Our winter office staff has again “adopted” several local families and has spent the past few weeks shopping to fulfill each family member’s holiday list. From socks and shoes to games, toys, books and winter coats, we’ve bought and wrapped it all! The gifts will be delivered by a fully suited TLC Santa Claus.

An extra thanks goes out to the many families from North Shore Day School and our other camp families that donated toys, gifts and clothes, and also to our camp families who so generously participated: Jason Littman & the Littman Family kindly donated rolls and rolls of wrapping paper; Michele and Steven Koss generously donated designer perfumes for the moms and older girls in each family; Michele and Evan Cagner donated dozens of pairs of shoes and boots. And another special thank you to the team behind FUSHIGI balls, who sent us these incredibly cool Fushigi balls that were at the top of every child’s list. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year from our family to yours!

North Shore Beats the Heat!

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

With record breaking temperatures across Long Island, people everywhere are trying to stay cool!  Here at North Shore, we’ve adapted our schedule to include more water sports, breaks in the shade and activities in our air-conditioned buildings to make sure that campers are staying healthy & hydrated, while also making sure they’re having fun!  We’ve got water relays, more periods in the pool and we’re liberally applying sunscreen and making sure there’s lots of water & fruit around camp for campers to eat!

Yesterday, ABC News stopped by to see exactly what we were doing to beat the heat!  Check out the video clip below!
