My name is Lee (on the right) and I’m 19 years old. I’m from Great Neck and I’m currently a sophomore at Quinnipiac University studying print journalism. I came to North Shore Day Camp as a camper back in 2002 along with my brother Mitchell who was in 2nd grade at the time, so I credit and thank my mom and dad for sending us. Little did I know that this place was going to be my second home!
The most important thing to know about me is that I love sports and everyone at camp knows that about me! In 5th grade, my camp nickname was Ripken, because I would wear Cal Ripken Jr.’s jersey twice a week (washed of course – thanks mom!) I’m also a big Mets, Jets, Knicks, and Rangers fan. My brother and I both played baseball each summer while growing up. Many times after the camp day was over, already exhausted by the fun at North Shore, we would hectically rush off the bus, change into our uniforms and be on our way to the diamond. Life was simple then – my responsibilities were to just have fun and be a kid, which I did. I was the captain of my baseball team in high school and playing baseball is still my favorite hobby today.

Hi – My name is Liz. I’m 41 years old and I live in Sea Cliff, Long Island. How I found myself at NSDC is rather interesting: I chose NSDC for my daughter Ryan to go to as a camper. After touring this magnificent place, it was clear to me that this camp was the most loving, nurturing and wonderful environment out there. Ryan attended NSDC for 2 summers, and I ultimately knew inside my heart that this is a place where I had to go to also!
At NSDC, I am one of the group leaders for the Stepping Stones campers. During the regular school year, I am a special education teacher. I work with children mainly from ages 2-5. I am also the PTA President for Ryan’s elementary school. So basically, I am working with children year-round, and I wouldn’t have it any other way! Some of my favorite interests are skiing and gardening. Next to working with children, those are two of my passions!
What I find particularly amazing is being able to watch my campers grow and become these great, outgoing little people. It’s thrilling and life-changing all at the same time because I get to see the effects of all the positive impacts that camp and making new friendships have on children.
As a parent of a camper too, I was incredibly impressed with how the camp is run. Particularly with the STARFISH philosophy. What also stands out is not only the exemplarily food that is served to the children daily, but the cleanliness of the camp grounds, and the maintenance of the facility in it’s entirety. As a group leader staff member, I can honestly say that I was even more impressed because I got to see how things were run from the inside. When my friends would ask how my summer was going, my response was simple: “I’d like to work at North Shore Day Camp FOREVER!”

This past weekend, the TLC Family of Camps took part in an awesome charity event at Columbia University - Camp Games for a Cause! Over 30 different camps in the tri-state area, represented by their camp staff, camp alumni and camp families participated in friendly competition while raising money for a wonderful cause - SCOPE. In this, it’s inaugural year, Camp Games for a Cause raised over $34,000 for SCOPE, helping to send under-privileged inner-city kids to summer camp!
We had about 25 young alumni & staff members from the TLC family show up to compete in some favorite camp games such as gaga, volleyball, dodgeball, and a dance competition where Ross Lazerowitz from Timber Lake posed as Justin Beiber! The day finished with a perennial camp favorite (and mass chaos!) – an Apache relay! Although there was a valiant effort by all, the TLC Family of Camps team came in 2nd place, but that just means that next year we will be going for the gold!

Hi! My name is Melissa and I’m 18 years old. I started out at North Shore Day Camp as a Stepping Stones Camper back in 1998, and now spend my summers lifeguarding and teaching swim. North Shore has always been a part of my family because my mother worked at the camp and my older brother was also a camper for several years too.
I grew up in Glen Head, so I am literally only minutes away from camp. I’ve met some of my closest friends at camp and I look forward to each summer – North Shore Day Camp is truly my second home. I absolutely love working at camp because of the friendly and enthusiastic atmosphere and I enjoy teaching the kids new swimming skills and making sure they are safe when they go swimming. My goal for each child is to have an amazing summer, just like I did when I came here as a camper!
During the school year I attend High School where this year I am the Senior Class President and I’m also involved in the yearbook club. I enjoy swimming, soccer and hanging out with my friends. After this summer however, I’ll be off to college where I’ll be studying elementary education. I can’t wait for this summer to begin! It’s only a few weeks away ~ I’ll see you all soon!!!
