Spotlight on Staff: Lee

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

My name is Lee (on the right) and I’m 19  years old. I’m from Great Neck and I’m currently a sophomore at Quinnipiac University studying print journalism. I came to North Shore Day Camp as a camper back in 2002 along with my brother Mitchell who was in 2nd grade at the time, so I credit and thank my mom and dad for sending us. Little did I know that this place was going to be my second home!

The most important thing to know about me is that I love sports and everyone at camp knows that about me! In 5th grade, my camp nickname was Ripken, because I would wear Cal Ripken Jr.’s jersey twice a week (washed of course – thanks mom!) I’m also a big Mets, Jets, Knicks, and Rangers fan.  My brother and I both played baseball each summer while growing up.  Many times after the camp day was over, already exhausted by the fun at North Shore, we would hectically rush off the bus, change into our uniforms and be on our way to the diamond.   Life was simple then – my responsibilities were to just have fun and be a kid, which I did.  I was the captain of my baseball team in high school and playing baseball is still my favorite hobby today.

NSDC Brings Holiday Cheer to Many Deserving Children

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

This holiday season, the TLC Family of Camps have come together to help out families in need with the Boys and Girls Club of Glen Cove by collecting toys and other small gifts for their Club Bucks program.

During the holiday season, the Club Bucks program is offered to the club’s children as an incentive program. Here, they earn “Club Bucks” for completing various tasks and doing good deeds, such as helping a staff person, getting an A on a test, doing all their homework, helping another friend, participate in an educational activity, etc.  At the end of the program, each child has the opportunity to “shop” in the Holiday Store to purchase gifts and toys for their siblings or other family members.  Some of the items collected were: stuffed animals, bracelets, gloves, socks, t-shirts and various children’s toys. The goal of the program is to convey the importance of “giving” during this holiday season – giving of their time, effort and service – and giving of gifts to loved ones.

Our day school, North Shore Day School, also led a food drive to help support LI Cares, a hunger action organization which distributed the canned goods we collected to local shelters and families in need.

North Shore Day Camp is proud to support the Boys and Girls Club & LI Cares during this season of giving and everyone here at camp wishes you a wonderful holiday and a very happy New Year!

Our Campers are Helping Others in Need

North Shore Day Camp Cares – and we show it along with our campers and their families in so many different ways.

This summer, our campers had the opportunity to participate in making other children’s lives better by bringing in canned and packaged food from home to help Island Harvest feed the homeless. This is Island Harvest’s first Camp Food Drive and we were so pleased to do our part to make this a tremendous success.

Our campers also took part in helping to fund camper-ships to Morry’s Camp.  Morry’s Camp is a unique four-week program which guarantees four summers of camp to under-privileged children who keep up with their school work and are positive role models in their community.

One of the ways in which we help is by having a camp-wide Swim-A-Thon.  Our campers gave it their all by either swimming or walking laps in our pools to raise money for inner city children who would otherwise not be able to attend summer camp. We keep track of what our campers accomplish and send home a record of the number of laps our campers swam (or walked for our non-swimmers).  The funds raised have truly made a difference in the lives of hundreds of children, and this year was no exception.  A HUGE thank you to our NSDC families and especially to our campers!  You have made such a difference in the lives of so many others!

It’s wonderful to see the proud faces of our campers who recognize their own selfless contributions. Through our STARFISH program we teach our campers that each individual can make a difference. Events like these show them that when each person does his or her part, together the impact is amazing!
